This is an interim version of our Privacy Policy. It describes how cicada.run handles personal information today. A fuller version is being prepared and will replace it, and we will change the date above when it does.
This policy explains how Cicada Bot, LLC ("Cicada," "we," "us") collects, uses, and shares personal information through cicada.run, app.cicada.run, the canvassing app, and related services (the "Service"). It covers two groups of people: people who use the Service, such as campaign staff and volunteers, and people whose contact information appears in the Service, such as residents and voters.
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and login details, and we record when you accept our Terms. If you pay for the Service, our payment processor, Stripe, collects your payment details. We receive your name, email address, and billing records, but not your full card number.
We collect information about how the Service is used, including pages viewed, features used, errors, and session recordings that capture what appears on screen. We use PostHog, an analytics provider, to do this. Volunteers using the canvassing app do not create an account. The app uses your device's location on your device to sort nearby addresses, and sends a location to us only when you place a pin to add a new contact.
The Service helps campaigns find and contact people in the areas they serve. When a campaign uses Contact Completion, names, phone numbers, and email addresses are added from a commercial data provider. We use geocoding services to place addresses on a map.
Campaigns may also upload their own lists, which can include any information the campaign chooses to provide. Campaigns and their volunteers record information in the Service, such as canvassing results, notes, and whether someone asked not to be contacted.
A campaign sees names, phone numbers, and email addresses only for contacts it uploaded itself or paid to complete through Contact Credits. Some state laws may treat a campaign's payment for these details as a sale of personal information. Lists, notes, and canvassing results that a campaign creates are not shown to other campaigns, although Cicada staff can access them to provide support.
We use information to provide and secure the Service, process payments, provide support, understand and improve how the Service is used, communicate with account holders about the Service, and comply with the law.
Campaigns decide whom to contact and what to say. Calls, texts, and emails started from the Service are sent from the campaign's or volunteer's own phone or email account, not by Cicada. Our Terms require campaigns to use contact information only for lawful campaign and political purposes, not to resell it, and to honor requests not to be contacted.
We share information with the campaigns that use the Service, as described above, and with service providers that help us run it: Clerk (accounts and login), Supabase (database and file storage), Stripe (payments), PostHog (analytics and session recordings), our commercial contact data provider, Geocodio and the U.S. Census Bureau (address geocoding), Mapbox and MapTiler (maps and address search), Google (web fonts), Cloudflare (website delivery), and Webflow (this website). We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of people or the Service, or as part of a merger or sale of our business.
Our website and apps use cookies and similar browser storage to keep you signed in and to measure usage through PostHog. You can block cookies in your browser settings, though some features may stop working.
Anyone, including people whose information appears in the Service, can ask us what information we hold about them, or ask us to correct it, delete it, or stop making it available to campaigns. We honor these requests for all U.S. residents, not only where a state law requires it, and we respond within 45 days. We may need to verify your identity first. If we deny a request, you can ask us to reconsider. To correct your official voter registration record, contact your county board of registrars.
We keep information for as long as the Service operates, unless you ask us to delete it or the law requires us to delete it sooner. We do not currently delete campaign data automatically after an election ends.
We use account login controls and established hosting providers to protect information, but no system is completely secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as the law requires.
Accounts are for adults 18 and older. Volunteers aged 17 or younger may use the canvassing app when a campaign invites and supervises them. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the Service.
When we update this policy, we will change the date at the top of this page. If a change is material, we will notify account holders by email before it takes effect.
